Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me.

The Harrowers are a term used to describe individuals or groups of people banding together to fight the forces of hell.  Over the centuries there have been many that fought against evil both through prayer and occasionally in a more direct method by engaging in combat.

For those that engage in direct combat, it becomes a slippery slope where the end often justifies the means resulting in not only a reduction in hell’s capability but also the loss of the soul of The Harrower themselves.  In an effort to stamp out the efforts of hell, the harrow finds themselves committing crimes, atrocities and sins that ultimately result in them ending up in the very place they are trying to destroy.

Does the world of Hellraiser fit into Christianity?

While the film universe has few references to Christianity, the expanded universe from the comics draws extensively on Christianity.  Explore our site to learn more including crossover points with the Bible, the desert fathers, spiritual warfare on much more.  Throughout the comics there are numerous references including crosses providing protection to wearers, crosses disabling the powers of Cenobites, numerous references pulled from the Bible’s book of Revelations and even references to the Desert Fathers (early followers of Christianity who went into the desert).

The Harrowers Logo Explained

The Harrowers logo is a mix of several iconic images mixed together.

The T is noticeably the Orthodox Cross.  The Orthodox church traces its founding back to Pentecost (~34 A.D.) and is the only true, holy, catholic (i.e. universal) church.  It was founded by Jesus and the 12 apostles and through, apostolic succession, laying of hands of leaders to its successors is still around today.

The three bars represent the holy trinity.  The bottom bar is slanted because while one thief that was crucified with Jesus repented, while the other taunted him.  The thief that repented (traditionally the one on the right of Jesus) went up to heaven and the thief on the left went down to hell.
The name comes from both the Hellraiser comics and the book The Scarlet Gospels, in which humans join in small team to fight the Cenobites through a mix of destroying Lemarchand's creations or by direct confrontation.  It is most noticeably the name of a six issue mini-series called "The Harrowers and the Raiders of the Abyss."
The words have a blue glow around them for two reasons.  The color blue is associated with humanity in the Orthodox church.  Christ is typically depicted in red (the color of divinity) with robes of blue (the color of humanity).  When the Virgin Mary is pictured she is typically wearing blue as her base layer (humanity) with robes of red (divinity).  Furthermore, through Hellraiser comics when The Harrowers are protected a blue glowing force field looking bubble of protection appears around them.
The O in Harrowers has been replaced by the Elysium Configuration.  The Elysium Configuration was known for ultimately destroying Pinhead at the end of Hellraiser IV: Bloodline.
